Metro 2039 — New Gameplay Trailer: Hunter, the New Reich, and a True Return to the Metro

Metro 2039 — New Gameplay Trailer: Hunter, the New Reich, and a True Return to the Metro

Hello, stalkers!

Deep Silver and 4A Games have released a new gameplay trailer for Metro 2039 titled Hunter. This time, it is not just an atmospheric presentation with lore and beautiful cinematics — we got almost three minutes of footage recorded entirely in-game.

And yes, the main fan theory has now been officially confirmed.

Hunter is the Führer of the New Reich.

The legendary Spartan, whom fans remember from Metro 2033, is no longer the protector of the Metro. He has become the face of a totalitarian regime. The New Reich keeps the stations under control through fear, propaganda, and promises of a “bright future” on the surface.

🔥 What the trailer showed:

• dark tunnels and abandoned stations;
• survivor settlements inside the Metro;
• ruined Moscow on the surface;
• New Reich soldiers;
• first-person stealth and gunfights;
• close-combat encounters with mutants;
• the new Shatun weapon;
• new items and gear elements;
• scenes where the environment itself tells the story.

In other words, this is once again not a walk through a beautiful post-apocalypse. This is the dirty, heavy, terrifying Metro.

🧟 The atmosphere feels closer to Metro 2033

Judging by the trailer, 4A Games really are bringing the series back to its darker roots: narrow corridors, darkness, fear, lack of air, mutants, bodies in abandoned rooms, and the feeling that death may be waiting around every corner.

The focus on “frozen stories” is especially noticeable — when a location, without any dialogue, tells you what happened there. This is exactly the kind of detail many fans love the series for.

👤 The Stranger vs. Hunter

The protagonist of Metro 2039 is the Stranger. In the new trailer, he directly accuses Hunter of lies and tyranny.

Judging by the monologue, the conflict will not simply be “hero versus villain.” There is clearly a personal history between the Stranger and Hunter, tied to the past, nightmares, and a return to the Metro.

The developers are not revealing everything yet, but it looks like the story will revolve around one central question: how could a legendary protector turn into a dictator?

⚠️ What is important to clarify

The trailer is not a full demonstration of a single mission, but rather a montage of gameplay scenes. Because of that, it is still too early to draw conclusions about level structure, game length, or the presence of an open world.

It is also too early to make any new claims about localization. After the previous situation with Steam, it is better to wait for official updates to the game’s store pages closer to release.

📅 When will it be released?

The game was previously promised for winter 2026/2027. Now the release window has become more specific:

Metro 2039 will be released in February 2027.

Platforms:

• PlayStation 5;
• Xbox Series X|S;
• PC — Steam and Epic Games Store.

🧠 Community observations

• The “Führer = Hunter” theory has been confirmed.
• The “Stranger and Hunter are the same person” theory still remains just a theory. But the admins think this may actually be true — for those who do not understand, it could be compared to Tyler Durden.
• The New Reich is increasingly looking not just like a faction, but like the main symbol of the game’s themes: fear, dictatorship, propaganda, and the price of silence.
• In terms of atmosphere, Metro 2039 is clearly aiming closer to Metro 2033 than to the more open spirit of Exodus.

Conclusion:

Metro 2039 is looking darker and harsher with every new reveal. The new trailer not only gave us the first proper look at gameplay, but also definitively placed Hunter at the center of the conflict.

The legendary Spartan has become the Führer.
The Metro is sinking into darkness once again.
And the Stranger is returning to the place he seemingly swore never to descend into again.

We are waiting for new showcases, analyzing every frame, and keeping our filters ready.
