☢️ 4A Games explains how the war changed Metro 2039's story

Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine has affected not only the circumstances under which Metro 2039 is being developed, but the game's story itself.
Speaking to Game Informer, 4A Games executive producer Jon Bloch explained that after the full-scale invasion began in 2022, the studio had to reconsider what kind of story it wanted to tell.
📖 Moving away from moral ambiguity
According to Bloch, previous Metro games were largely about preventing another war and often left the moral judgment of events to the player.
Characters, factions, and their actions could remain morally ambiguous, while player choices affected consequences and endings.
For Metro 2039, the team's own experience pushed the developers toward a different approach.
Back in April, 4A Games said the new story would focus on the cost of silence, the horrors of tyranny, and the price of freedom.
That is also reflected in the new Novoreich faction. Hunter's regime controls the Metro through propaganda, misinformation, and fear.
🇺🇦 The war became part of the developers' lived experience
Much of the 4A Games team continues to work from Kyiv and elsewhere in Ukraine while dealing with air raids, strikes, and power outages.
As a result, themes of war, power, repression, and authoritarianism are no longer purely fictional subjects for the team.
Metro 2039 is set to take a more direct approach to those themes, although the developers have not yet revealed exactly how this will affect the story or the player's choices.
Metro 2039 is scheduled to launch on February 4, 2027.
